Three Sonoma Hikes Close to Warm Springs Cottage
1. Wolf House Historic Trail
Jack London State Historic Park | Easy | 1 mile round trip
This short trail leads from the museum parking area to the atmospheric ruins of Jack London’s dream home and passes the gravesite of Jack and Charmian London. It combines nature with the history that makes Glen Ellen distinctive.
The trail has approximately 200 feet of elevation change. Leashed dogs are permitted on this particular trail. Visitors could easily combine it with the Beauty Ranch buildings and museum for a longer outing.
2. Valley of the Moon Trail
Sonoma Valley Regional Park | Easy | 2.4 miles round trip
This is the walk you remember connecting Highway 12 with Arnold Drive. The paved, ADA-accessible trail travels for 1.2 miles each way through shaded oak woodland alongside a seasonal creek.
It is nearly flat, with benches and picnic tables along the route. Leashed dogs and bicycles are permitted. It is a particularly good recommendation for families, older guests, casual walkers and muddy winter days.
3. Sonoma Creek Waterfall
Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, Adobe Canyon Road | Easy to moderate
Sugarloaf offers several ways to reach its seasonal waterfall:
Lower Canyon Trail: 0.45 mile round trip, easiest
Upper Canyon Trail: 0.8 mile round trip, but steep, with approximately 100 steps
Pony Gate–Canyon Loop: 2 miles with 450 feet of elevation gain
For the guide, I would feature the two-mile Pony Gate–Canyon Loop while mentioning the shorter alternatives. The falls are most impressive after winter rain and may be minimal or dry late in the season. Dogs are not permitted on Sugarloaf trails.
These three primary hikes also provide a very good range: local history, an easy shaded walk and a more adventurous waterfall excursion.
